Rallycross: Roberts Vītols shocks Great Britain! Victory!

May 29, 2021

Latvian Roberts Vītols ended his debut race in the Supercar class with a shock on Saturday: he won the first round of the British Rallycross Championship at Leadenhill.

Last year’s British Super 1600 champion Vītols received the Supercar race as a reward for winning the championship last year. Although the Provento Racing team did not set the driver a specific position, Roberts surprised everyone with a beautiful victory.

Qualifying did not start as expected, as in the first race, the turbine broke at the start, as a result of which Vītols left the track at the end of the first lap. In the second qualifying, he was fifth out of five in his group, but the result in terms of time was promising – only two seconds separated the first and fifth positions. In the third race, Vītols took second place in his group, but in the race total, he was third.

After reaching the semi-finals, Roberts finished in third place, qualifying for the main race.

In the final, the Latvian drove like a textbook. After the start, the riders split into two groups – four went to the main circuit, and three, including Vītols, to Joker. Of the Joker riders, Roberts was the first. Leaving the track extension, Roberts rushed after those who had not yet been to Joker. At this moment, when the goal was ahead, but the track was relatively clear, excellent speed was demonstrated, which probably also arranged the decisive part of the ride.

As the leaders went one by one to the Joker, Vītols climbed one position higher, reaching the leading position at the end of the race. Uģis Vītols comments on his son’s race: “The pace he showed was great! After the semi-final, he taught the mechanics a nuance of adjustment that the team had not planned to use. After the final, the driver said that the car was perfect, exactly what he had wanted.”

“Right now… The emotions that reigned in our team during the trip are, of course, indescribable, and right now everyone here is on the hook. Now that the trip is over, I feel a little confused. I didn’t believe in anything like that. All these strong old men who have been riding here for years…”

Roberts Vītols’ commentary will also be available soon.
